1159 l’Abbaye de Grandmont

Pour s’adapter et survivre à l’austérité de  l’abbaye, les ermites-moines organisèrent leur vie commune. En 1159 le Prieur (= le Premier) établit un règlement intérieur qu’il fit approuver par le pape et qu’il communiqua à tous ceux qui se réclamaient d’Etienne de Muret (fondateur de l’abbaye). L’Ordre naquit et il fut sponsorisé par les souverains anglo-normands, la famille Plantagenet, celle de Mathilde au Courtabiau, Mathilde qui,  veuve, épousa Geoffroy V Plantagenet. Leur fils Henri II Plantagenet épousa Aliénore d’Aquitaine. Leur fils Henri le Jeune fut enterré à Grandmont. En 1192 Richard Coeur de Lion, autre fils, s’arrêta à Grandmont et finança l’achèvement des travaux du Prieuré. Jean Sans Terre succéda à son frère comme souverain d’Aquitaine et accorda au Prieur le droit de haute et basse justice. Ainsi tous ces importants personnages furent par tradition familiale d’une grande et constante  générosité envers les ermites. Henry II songea faire de Grandmont l’équivalent pour les Plantagenets,  de la Basilique de Saint-Denis pour les rois de France. Il souhaitait y être enterré. Mais le coeur d’Aliénor penchait plutôt vers l’Abbaye de Fontevraud…. Et Aliénor survécut à Henry…

To survive austerity in the abbey, the closed order of  monks organised their  life in common.  In 1159, the Prior (=the Premier) established a law which gained the Pope’s blessing. Then  he applied the law to all those who  accepted the founder of the Abbey, Etienne de Muret . The Order was born:  it was sponsored by the Anglo-Norman Kings, the Plantagenets:  Mathilde married Geoffrey V Plantagenet after her death in 1152, their son, Henry II, inherited the throne of England  (+Duke of Maine and Anjou + Normandy). He married Eleonor of Aquitaine. Later, in 1192, Richard The Lion Heart, who was then King of England (+ Duke of Maine and Anjou+ Duke of Normandy+ Duke of Aquitaine), stayed at abbey and decided to finance the completion of the Prieuré. After Richard’s death, John Lackland, King of England, his successor, gave a special right to the Abbey: the monks would  be in charge of Justice over the region.  In later times, all the royals remained,  by tradition, very generous for the Abbey. Henry II thought of the Abbey of Grandmont to be, for the Plantagenets,  the equivalent of la Basilique de Saint-Denis to the French kings. He wanted to be burried there and  his family after him….. But Eleonor had set her heart on the Abbey of Fontevraud and she survived Henry…
